Collaborative innovation is the philosophy by which Magnet-Schultz of America (MSA) pursues all opportunities. First, the MSA sales and engineering team collaborates with our customers to fully understand the requirements of their application.
We then collaborate internally, amongst all departments as well as with outside suppliers, to enable MSA engineering to fully explore and develop the most innovative, technically superior and cost-effective solution.
This is an iterative process, often going back-and-forth until the most optimal solution is achieved. The ultimate goal is to use collaborative innovation to turn MSA knowledge into customer value.
Engineering Design and Development Software
MSA utilizes the following software in all of our design and development work:
- Solid Works—2D and 3D CAD software
- Arcsoft—2D and 3D Magnetic Simulation Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software
- TK Solver—Mathematical modeling and equation solving software
- Lab View—Software used for automated testing procedures and data collection
MSA’s Engineering Team
Magnet-Schultz of America has six experienced project engineers, with more than 90 combined years of solenoid, electromagnetic and mechanical engineering design experience.
In addition to their solenoid and electromagnetic design background, our engineers have extensive industry experience which includes the design of transformers, electrical relays and switches, pneumatic and hydraulic valves, automotive and appliance components, and security systems.
With an average longevity at MSA exceeding 11 years, the experience our engineering team brings to every new project provides the rapid “time-to-market” that our customers demand.

MSA engineering utilizes the following test equipment, where relevant, throughout our design and development process:
- Life Cycle and Functional Testing
MSA has the ability to perform both functional testing and life cycle testing on all MSA products, on competitor’s products, and on MSA product related sub-assemblies taken from the customer’s system.
We can also work closely with the customer to help establish meaningful life cycle and functional test programs, to be run by the customer, with MSA products that have been installed into the customer’s assembly. Such combined test efforts often reveal many design and material related issues that might otherwise not come to light.
- Force/Stroke Testing
MSA has specialized Zwick test equipment that is used in our engineering labs and in production, to precisely measure and record the force/stroke characteristics of our Linear Actuators and Electromagnets.
- Environmental Testing
In-House Environmental Test Capabilities
Magnet-Schultz of America has the capability to do both high and low temperature cycling, as well as testing for water ingression. Such testing can reveal the temperature and humidity performance limits of any product and/or sub-assembly.
External Environmental Test Capabilities
For test requirements that are beyond MSA’s in-house capabilities, we rely on strong relationships with multiple local testing and certification laboratories to provide every conceivable test paradigm needed for design validation and verification.
MSA also has the benefit of the vast engineering experience and test capabilities that reside at our parent company, Magnet-Schultz of Memmingen Germany (MSM). MSM can perform extensive mechanical and environmental testing, including salt spray, high humidity, shock and vibration.
- Test Equipment for Hydraulic-Solenoid Tubes
MSA has specialized test equipment that can perform high pressure testing and design verification related to the Actuator Tubes that MSA manufactures for use on Hydraulic Valves.
This equipment pressurizes hydraulic fluid, and then applies internal pulses of up to 10,000 psi. at three ms duration for one million cycles, to the inside of Actuator Tubes. The purpose of this test is to determine the point at which the tube might experience mechanical-fatigue failure. All such tests are done in conformance with National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) standards.
MSA’s internal machine shop and experienced craftsmen can quickly produce small quantities of precision custom components for use in prototype designs.
MSA engineers oversee the assembly and testing of every prototype, and then provide a summary report to accompany all products that are sent to our customers.
