Magnet-Schultz of America Frozen Design Policy (MSA-FD)

There is a cost-to-benefit ratio related to defining and achieving the degree of “frozen” that is desired. Concerning FD, the following definitions help customers understand and determine the one or combination of terms that best suits their application needs …

MSA policy on Frozen Design is driven by three very distinct categories of products. Understanding these product categories and defining the degree of FD that is required for a new project is a critical component and the result of a collaborative effort between the customer and MSA, very early in the design phase of any new project.

1. Reference Designs (Standard Products)—never frozen.

2. Customized Reference Designs (CRD)—incorporate common and customized, and/or fully custom components and design elements. When changes to common components do not affect the form, fit or function of the CRD end product, the CRD design is not frozen. If there is any chance that either fit or performance could be impacted by updates made to common components, and whenever changes are required for any customized or totally custom components, the design is frozen.

3. Totally Custom Product designs—frozen at the component level and the final assembly.

Magnet-Schultz of America Frozen Process Policy (MSA-FP)

The term Frozen Process (FP) can present a spectrum of possibilities—from totally strict (absolutely no change allowed to any process), to a guiding rule. MSA’s typical manufacturing process is not considered frozen because it is governed by well-established, cost-effective, real-world guidelines, where process changes are allowed because they do not alter the form, fit or function of the end product …

MSA-FP will utilize any manufacturing equipment and process, lean assembly cell, and outside service/material supplier necessary to ensure that the precision and integrity of every component—the form, fit and function of every final assembly will meet and exceed our customer’s technical and commercial expectations.

Only upon request, MSA can offer the most strict, totally frozen manufacturing process and allow absolutely no manufacturing process changes.

Also upon request, MSA can offer a blend (mutually agreed upon combination) of the two definitions described above, perfectly tailored to meet the unique needs of a customer’s application.
